Very true. There are some really good essays on the subject of education that would be interesting to discuss. Paulo Freire, a Brazilian whose theories on education are ring true still today, addresses this exact issue in his book 'Pedagogy of the Opressed' (1970). He talks about the "banking" concept of education. Essentially he makes the comparison between schools and banks. In the "banking" or "narrative" type of education, the teacher "deposits" knowledge into the empty minds of the students. The students minds are obviously empty, and the teachers are obviously full. The students are ignorant, and the teachers are enlightened. This is the kind of education most of us are used to. But, as we all know, this rarely works.

The alternative to this would be a more "cognitive" education. It would be more discussion based. Freire calls this the dialogical method. He also talks about the "problem-solving method". I firmly agree with this. I think the best way to learn is to encounter and overcome problems, on your own and with others. There is no greater way to learn then to face real problems and challenges. One problem with BHS (and schools in general) is that there is a big gap between what you learn and how it affects your daily life. School shouldn't be so remote. You should be able to walk home every day with new knowledge that you can use and think about immediately. Unfortunately our education system is way too career-based. The only reason we see ourselves going to school is to get a good job and more money. We lack any real love of knowledge. Learning History or English is only important so that you can get good grades and go to a good college. The actual relevance of the subject is entirely glossed over by teachers, and thus dismissed by students. This is a pathetic way to learn.

True. Makes one wonder why we haven't caught on to this, 2000 years after it was concieved.

I do think there is a subtle difference between Freire's "problem solving" method and the "Socractic method", however. Most teachers in BHS will tell you they employ the Socratic-method on a regular basis. They support this claim by giving extremely basic examples. For instance, nearly every teacher today uses the technique of asking students what the answer to a question is, instead of answering it themselves. "Does anyone know what this word means?" is a common phrase in BHS classrooms. To me this is just an excuse, however. Feel free to differ, but as far as I'm concerned that is a surface-layer example of the Socrates-method. I think what Freire is arguing is that problem-solving education needs to be at the very core of the class-room, not on the outskirts. It should be the fundamental essence of education, not just a system that compliments it.

At the moment I believe teachers do use it occasionally, as a way to add some variety to the class-room. This reveals itself in the shape of class discussions, group projects, a research paper, and chem or bio labs. Unfortunately these only appear on a rare occasions, and are by all means the exception rather then the rule. In the sciences BHS used to have an excellent program, with labs on a daily basis. But with budget cuts even that is quickly dissappearing. But what about the English or History classroom? I believe surveys show that the class high school students detest the most is History. Moreso then Math, something that innitially surprised me. This is not entirely surprising, however, if you sit-in on a history class. For me, history is all about interpretation, and I think our classrooms completely lack that. Instead we get a very narrow tale told by the teacher, and it ussually swings either extremeley left or right (more often the former in Berkeley's case). It is all very swell to go hear a story every day, but more often then not the story-teller has less interest in the subject then the students.

The real reason there is no discussion in the classroom is that people try too hard. "There must be discussion in the classroom!" got translated into "Everyone's opinion is valid!" got translated into "Don't ever tell anyone they're wrong!" got turned into "Don't challenge the students!" Without challenge, the students lose interest. All that's left is a mushy mix of career-preparation and "okay, everyone get crayons and express your inner being on a poster." Because that's all the room we give teachers to move in; anything more would not be PC. Dialogue is not PC because it implies that you're not accepting everyone's opinions. Stop smothering the teachers, then maybe students will regain their interest.

I fully agree. I didn't mean to imply in my post that the class-room needs to be an open ended forum that goes on an infinite number of tangents. That would obviously be horrible. But it should be the sort of environment where students can feel encouraged to speak up and be challenged, as you put it. In many of our classrooms this just isn't a reality. In fact, in many of the classrooms the mechanisms aren't even in place for students to speak up. Being "PC" has put a ton of pressure on teachers in Berkeley. It is a common mistake to assume that just because these pressures are liberal they are ok. They aren't. They are just as bad as the conservative pressure that were in schools 40-50 years ago.
