You have overlooked or perhaps glossed over one important angle of your take on the "Patriotic Quote of the day." Instead of mindlessly submitting to the fascist propaganda, as 99 percent of the teachers around the country would, BHS History teacher Hasmig Minnassian (tragically pink-slipped) has taken on the challenge of finding these quotes. Some of her selctions will clearly show that Berkeley has not betrayed itself. Cesar Chavez, Muhammad Ali, Frederick Douglass are among those quoted not W, Jerry Falwell or Dennis Hastert. I wholeheartedly agree with the sentiment about this awful regulation but Berkeley High still has some fight within left in it.

I couldn't agree more. Rather than seeing this is as punishment, BHigh should see this as an opportunity to speak out on the nature of patriotism.

My marketing genius starts to swirl: "Berkeley High School -- redefining patriotism for the 21st century..."

I'm a junior at Deer Valley High, in Antioch. If we had to read a patriotic quote of the day at my school, our school t.v. station (that's right, we have our own station for announcements, although it's a stupid piece of shit) would be littered with quotes supporting our current war with Iraq. In short, Antioch is quite the overgrown hicksville, just the opposite of Berkeley.
