Brevity is the soul of wit.
[Thursday Jun 8.06 ¬ 1:01 AM]It’s been an exciting week.
It all started off with Senior Ball on Saturday, which I had the pleasure of attending. Truly was an amazing experience, despite the minor inconveniences and discomforts which are present every year (lines for photos, lines to get in, crowded and sweat dance floor, et cetera) as well as the major inconvenience—or convenience, depending on your plans—of the Bay Bridge closing after midnight. This was inconvenient for the obvious reason that people in cars and limos couldn’t get home the easy way. It was convenient for the cheap folks, because it meant that BART would be running all night (albeit infrequently).
Sunday was a recovery day, to put it simply.
Monday was the day of our annual Senior Streak, in which bunches of Seniors group together, get naked, paint themselves in red and yellow, and run masked through the crowds populating the BHS courtyard. As usual, the school desperately tried to stop the joy parade. From streakers’ accounts—highly confidential sources, of course—doors were locked, security was everywhere, and it was just an all around difficult day for nudity at Berkeley High. They managed though, and if you’re interested, the event was even caught on camera and published by some enterprising fellow at this website. It’s a mostly boring clip and takes a long time to load, but you can watch the first few seconds to get an idea of what it’s like.
If you ask my opinion, the school is being just a little bit silly with this whole streaking thing. I don’t know the exact history of the streak, but from what I hear it’s been going on for at least two decades. I think it’s pretty clear that it’s still going to happen next year, even if they put electric fences around the school and hide it with an enlarged version of Harry Potter’s invisibility cloak. It’s not even that offensive—I’m clearly coming from a biased perspective, but I’ve never spoken to anyone who was offended by it. Even most of the teachers seem to enjoy it; many of them let their students out of class early to watch it. It seems to me that the school’s efforts could be put to better use than stopping a bunch of naked seniors from baring their bodies and souls to the school for a few breif moments.
Most of the streakers seem to have gotten away with it, but a handful were caught and slapped with the unfortunate punishment of 40 hours of community service before graduation. That is obscene, I say. Positively obscene.
Tuesday was election day, but more importantly to the students of Berkeley High School, it was the day of the senior trip to Santa Cruz—which the school cleverly planned on the day of Senior Skip. From what I hear it was pretty fun. I didn’t go—I was working at a voting precinct for the day.
And Wednesday was a late-start day—the last of the year. It’s just been a week of special events all around.
So what special events lie in store for the rest of the week?
Nothing of the same significance as Senior Streak, of course, but a play opens Thursday night (a play that I act in, I might add) and runs Friday and Saturday. The play is called WIT; it’s about a woman with ovarian cancer. If you’re interested in seeing it, the Thursday and Saturday shows start at 6 o’clock and will include dinner. The Friday show starts at 8. The show takes place in the black box theater, which has its entrance by the Allston gate next to the administration building on the corner of Allston and Milvia.
Also, immediately following the Saturday night showing of Wit, will be the annual Advanced Theater Projects (ATPs) One Acts show. It can be a night of theater.
Next week is finals and then graduation. Where did the time go?
