Hey You, C’mere
[Tuesday Aug 21.07 ¬ 1:11 PM]Okay, folks, it’s time to step up.
This site is now five school-years old and has been active for that entire time. It has seen three different chief editors, each of them BHS students at the time.
Traditionally, the current editor finds his replacement at some point during his tenure, trains them to whatever extent is necessary, and turns the site over to the new ownership when he graduates. That happened twice, but unfortunately the last editor neglected to find his replacement—so now we’ve got the coming school year looming without anyone to man the site.
People, I can’t force you, guilt you, or coerce you, but the fact is that this site will either keep running or it won’t. I have no problem leaving it up inactive, but it is next to worthless as a static archive, barely more than a curiosity. BerkeleyHigh.org needs someone to run it, a voice behind the code, and that someone needs to be a volunteer.
The tradition of this site is to give free rein to its new owners, so if you take over, the ship is yours; whatever purpose or focus you think would be most useful or interesting in a community website, that’s your call to make. It requires some basic web skills or at least the willingness to learn them, competence (or better yet, virtuosity) as a writer, and the dedication to consistently give some of your time to the site for at least a year. (When you graduate or leave the school, you’re done; it goes to new hands. However, if you’re not yet a senior, you’re perfectly welcome to run things for more than one year.)
This is a pretty cool opportunity, no joke. You’ll have the chance to write and create content for an audience of a very large community—students, parents, faculty, and other interested parties—and make some influence known during your time at BHS. And I know for a fact that several students have had this on their applications as they applied to college, or their resumes as they applied for jobs.
If you have any interest in this, drop me a line at brandon@berkeleyhigh.org, or call (831) 239-0683. If you have some friends who are also interested, a team of several would be just as good or better. Hell, if you know anyone who would be a decent candidate, hound them until they capitulate. This site is not dying just because nobody would take the wheel.
Let’s keep this legacy going, and keep open our only totally independent outlet of communication.
