June 5, 2003 To: Berkeley High School students, staff and parents From: Michele Lawrence, Superintendent It is with immense disappointment that I announce that Patty Christa has resigned her appointment as Berkeley High School Principal. Patty called me three days ago to tell me of her decision. Yesterday, Neil Smith and I met with her to have a more in-depth conversation in order that we might better understand the reasons for her sudden turn around. After a frank and open discussion, she stated that, after meeting with a number of staff and parents, she had come to the belief that the challenges that she would encounter were greater than she was prepared to commit her professional and personal time to resolving. These seemingly larger than anticipated problems, coupled with the pleading of her own community to remain in her district, became too overwhelming for her to ignore. We regret that our conversation with Patty did not lead her to realize that her talents might have contributed greatly to resolving our shortcomings or allow her to envision our incredible potential. But that was not her conclusion. What Patty shared with us, through an experienced perspective, may help us to assist the next principal and the BHS community through our next steps. Now, we have to put her decision behind us and move forward. Since she informed me of her decision, I have had conversations with the other finalists and discussions with retired administrators about possible short-term or long-term assignments. No decisions have been made, but given the importance of having a smooth opening for September, developing the master schedule, hiring and assigning teachers, initiating small schools, completing the construction projects, and conducting summer school as well as other tasks, I am moving with deliberate speed to develop a strategy to ensure that our school does not lose the momentum it has gained over these past two years. I pledge to give you weekly updates of the status of the principal position and the other issues until you leave in June, and then periodically throughout the summer. I know that you are probably disheartened by this news. But, as your Superintendent during these past two years, I know that even in our most difficult financial times, Berkeley High School has shown the potential to inspire all students to the highest levels of achievement. I believe deeply in this and maintain the confidence that in working together it will be achieved. Let's not allow this news to dampen graduation activities or the spirits of so many of you who should be recognized for your hard work and wonderful accomplishments this year.
