The Moderator's Code. (Mostly obvious, but as the saying goes, sometimes common sense isn't.) Compiled by Brandon "vector40" Oto 1. Your job mostly consists of two things: Making sure the chat stays legal (meaning not, say, child porn), and making sure the chat stays somewhere that people will want to be (meaning not spammed, stupid, offensive, broken, etc.). Familiarize yourself with the rules, use common sense, and when in doubt, take a minimalist approach. "First, do no harm." The best mod is invisible nearly always. 2. You are a member of the channel, but you also have power over it. If you don't want to let the latter completely overwhelm the former (you don't), keep the two roles separate. Think of yourself like Superman or a reserve cop; mostly, you're just a normal guy, but when your other shoes are needed, you can hop into them. 3. You are not better than anyone else, in any way, shape, or form. A mode does not mean that you are more right, more intelligent, or more important. It just means you've been entrusted with a small amount more responsibility. 4. Your job is solely and wholly to maintain the integrity of the channel. Kicking/banning/quieting/+m'ing (or whatever) for any other reason is almost certainly an abuse of your privileges, whether or not it's a big deal. 5. Respect the channel members. The joke may be funny, but it's not as funny to the guy you're messing with. It's like a practical joke -- don't be a dick. 6. Respect the hierarchy. There isn't very much difference between half-ops versus ops versus channel admins/superops, but the important difference is that the guys above you are entrusted with the final say. Accept that. 7. Respect the decisions of fellow mods. You may not agree with what the other guy did, but take that up with him privately (or with a higher level, if it's a larger issue and doesn't get resolved). Counteracting his actions undermines the effectiveness of the system. 8. As a matter of form, if you log multiple clients, only leave one (at the most) wearing your permissions at a time. It's unpleasant to see a massive number of mods swarming a channel, even if half of them are duplicates. 9. As a matter of form, nobody should be handing out permissions (except possibly as a joke, in which case you should probably defer to rule #4 and #5) except for KP and c0ld. 10.
